After Ok Go’s “Last Leaf” video, I thought they could never get better than “This Too Shall Pass”. This one proved me wrong.

CATNAPS - Johnny

CATNAPS is definitely my great discover so far this year. The indie pop band based in Philadelphia, formerly known as “When I was 12”, has pulled out some real standard hipster stuff (see the paradox there?) in their 2-track album “BOYS DROOL”, and what better time to release it than on valentine’s day?

Compared to their 2011 release “Why don’t you whisper?”, this album is like 2 canons vs 12 pistols, in which I’m on the canons’ side. In my spontaneous opinion, Adrianne Gold - singer/guitarist has all it takes to be Wavves’ lady and Bleeding Knees Club’s wife.

Get the album here.

Music’s Freedom farewell note

Tomorrow will mark one year of Music’s Freedom. The first intention of setting up this page is to spread my obsession about music to whoever it can reach. I’m staying in a country where its root has nothing to do with what I listen to and people are brainwashed by crap played on local radios everyday. Most of them origin from the fake plastic sound of Korean and Chinese Pop where creativity is a fallen hero being replaced by excess glamour and ornateness.

This is the last post of Music’s Freedom. I decided to change the page’s name to Tune It Right. In fact, I’ve always wanted to do this in a long time since Music’s Freedom is too powerful a name to use while music is a subjective matter where I don’t have any right to define what is freedom and what’s not.

The name may change, but the philosophy will always stay the same, the music will stay the same, and the passion will never stop growing.

Remember people, TuneItRight.info

Youth Lagoon - Cannons

Youth Lagoon (Trevor Powers)’s dream pop debut “The Year Of Hibernation” has been circulating around since September. Immediately, I became a huge fan of Trevor the same way that happened to me and Cults.

Trevor’s magic potion lies within his recognizable melodies, laid-back/dreamy arrangements, innocent lyrics and a voice of a young teenager whose mind is a few years beyond his age. It’s hard to believe that Trevor is 22, an age that makes him too old to talk about hide-and-seek. However, digging deeper into his lyrics soon made me realize that those are not only childhood stories for tell. They’re also a realization - sometimes cruel and painful, from innocent dreams to reality, from childhood to adulthood. Before one gets closer to death as each day passes, the dreams have long gone.

As its title suggests, “The Year Of Hibernation” is an isolated, almost holly place where adult distractions are out of bounds and childhood dream is the only religion.

I Know Myself - Mammoth Logic

Been a while since I last heard a band who totally nailed a 70s’ synth-pop sound with such intensity. It’s a moment of truth during the first 3 seconds, either your head or your body goes out of control and starts swinging like a mad dog. Some bits of them remind me of Datarock, which makes perfect sense.

Mammoth Logic’s debut, “Control”, will be out on 14th Oct. Keep track of them here.

Music’s Freedom Mixtape (October 2011) (Download)

My ears have been living in that dark and depressed side of the music world recently, so it gave me a real hard time picking songs for this mixtape. I tried not to get you guys deep into that doomed hell shit but still, my choices are somehow influenced by it. So…, deal with me this time.

Artemecia - Tree

Here are some real cool things I digged out from bandcamp today:

“You will find a wide range of new sounds including a bassline made with a Didgeridoo, a gameboy, coffee grinders, a synth made from my dog barking, clocks, multiple flutes for both high/mid synths and all kinds of sounds of strange little instruments. For my drums i used recordings of my toasters, can openers, every sound i could find in my kitchen, my turkish hand drum, and the list could go on forever…” - Tree

I’m in the process of laying down tracks for one of my own songs and this is a huge inspiration. Wonder how it sounds like? Well, I’ll post it up if I think it’s not a disaster. In the mean time, find yourself some peace in this song though the whole album won’t be available till Oct.

Tongue Tied - Grouplove

To be honest, Grouplove’s first full-length - “Never Trust A Happy Song” is not one of my favorites this year. Despite that ugly truth, I can still predict with certainty that this release will eventually explode like a Bomb. Sugar coated melodies, high level of production and great musicianship buoy up a massive energy that constantly flows across the album, at the same time still be able to keep every single song as listener-friendly as possible. Keys To The Kingdom - Garbage God

Garbage God’s Actress was the latest to hit my soft spot. DIY music with simple production, not perfect, yet still able to mess around with your ears. There’re still plenty of rooms for Garbage God to work on, but they’re already kicking some potential lo-fi anthems like Keys To The Kingdom and Bullied By Science.
